Text by d’Hélène Frappat

Performance presents the work of ten photographers invited, through a commission for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, to take up the theme of sport as an echo of our world, its contemporary stakes and its relationship to new representations of the performing body. The book offers a visual reading of the projects produced by the selected artists, spanning the full range of image-making, from reportage and documentary practice to the visual arts. Three disciplines newly entered into Olympic competition, skateboarding, climbing and breakdancing, hold a place of choice, as do alternative and imaginary sports. Together the projects show that representing sport differently, beyond the usual schemes of its media broadcast, is a perpetually renewed challenge, and for photography a crossroads of aesthetics, from visual communication to art, from reportage to fiction, from fashion to new urban cultures.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
