Kan Sawa's photographs collected in a single volume: streetscapes of Tokyo, landscapes from around the world, portraits, architecture and abstract, painting-like images. The works are so different in character that they seem to have been taken by different photographers. Each was captured instinctively, whenever Sawa felt a strangeness towards the subject, and illuminates a glimpse of the past and future of the place, whether real or imaginary.

Sawa's incisive perspective reveals a continuing present and reminds us of an alternate reality that may become our future. As Sawa saw the world in the changing scenery of his childhood, the moments and sceneries he captured connect with the viewer's own memories and trigger reflection on their feelings. The book closes with his text on light emitted billions of years ago, a world that was simply there until it was caught in the light and became an image, and his decision to set out to look for the future of this world.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
