A newly photographed series commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the 'cardigan pression', the iconic piece of the fashion brand agnès b. Kawauchi composed the work in two parts: in the first half she trains her lens on her own young daughter, who wears the cardigan; in the second she delves into a reminiscence of her own life forty years earlier, at the age of seven.

Within the book there is a story, at times serene and at times dynamic, born from the intermingling of past and future across one woman's precious forty years. Kawauchi writes of dressing her daughter in the cardigan almost thirty years later: a profound moment, and also a feeling that her past self had been left behind, along with the wish to tell that stifled child that in forty years she would be enjoying life with her daughter.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
