The latest volume of Yoshihiko Ueda's M series, which has sought the ancient sources of life in mountains, rivers and seas and now turns to the Ganges and to people. Within light and colour that have lost their outlines, the photographs hold memories of wailing and joy and of impermanence: the memory of the photographic gaze, of distant places, of people and times gone by. Ueda describes how he came to feel that he was not gazing at someone in a photograph but seeing himself in the photograph he had taken; what lay in his line of sight were his memories, or rather memories from a distant past that for some reason did not seem to be his own. The book is presented as the summation of the M series.
