Photographs from 1990 to 2011: the Suntory Oolong Tea advertising series that Yoshihiko Ueda made during the years of China's great transformation, a landmark of advertising photography, together with the snapshots he took of China on those journeys. Serene light, continental landscapes and the lives and presence of people, shot on location trips around Guilin, Shenyang, Shanghai and Dalian among other places, with chance encounters in the frame: people met on the road who appear in an advertisement as they were, the scenery of the land leading the photographs. Ueda sums up the China of those days in the phrase faraway feeling, recalling the landing at Beijing Airport in winter, where a faint smell of burning briquettes hung in the air. The oolong tea pictures run in chronological order beside his snapshots, in a common gaze that holds vast time and space.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
