A house facing the sea, a garden where flowers sway, a family cherishing its days: a photobook born from the film of Yoshihiko Ueda, who directed, wrote and shot it for the first time on a theme he had long held. Cut from the film and composed with a few words, the pictures float away from the story and hold the rich breathing and time the images weave. The loss and memory each person carries, the gestures of life lived beside the garden, and a quiet yet urgent beauty rising as the seasons turn and time moves towards life and death. Between photography and film, book and cinema, it calls up memories and the present in each reader. Ueda recalls fifteen years passing since the day he began to write a small story about a house, after finding an empty lot where a house and a beloved large tree had stood.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
