One day the photographer Yoshihiko Ueda happened upon an apple tree. Captivated in an instant, he photographed it impulsively from his car window, yet was left with a strong desire to return. Several years later he revisited the same village in the same season to photograph it again; the tree, he later learned, was the oldest apple tree in the village. Photographed with a large-format 8 x 10 camera, the tree made his eyes rejoice and pleasure well up to fill his whole body. These large-format images, distilled into the intimate scale of the book, convey both the vitality of the tree, its glowing red fruit shimmering with light, and the closeness of the moment when the shutter was released. The book captures the life force and the passage of time embodied in the tree, and Ueda's exhilaration at meeting it. Its supple design carries a quiet sense of both nostalgia and freshness, a warm, inviting volume that rests naturally in the hand. Ueda first saw the tree from a taxi window in the village of Kawaba, deep in the mountains of Gunma, laden with rosy red fruit, and the sight stayed etched in his mind for years.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
