Nobuyoshi Araki is perhaps Japan's most famous photographer of nudes, and this book collects his photographs of 19 nude women who faced breast cancer and chose reconstructive surgery to regain a breast. Yet Araki takes a back seat to his subjects, whose lives and stories are the real focus: each portrait conveys a divine presence and a sense of life that only photography can express. Produced with the STP Project, the book shows the strength of women who have overcome the sorrow and stress of breast cancer to live full lives, and its main aim is to tell those who have been diagnosed, or who have lost a breast, that a beautiful breast can be regained. As a cancer survivor himself, and a vivacious personality, Araki is a fitting choice to take photographs that simply brim over with life. The women represent a wide range of ages and places across Japan, including Okinawa. Each has written a page about her experience, printed at the back of the book together with information about breast cancer, and the project planned to donate the book to breast surgeons and nurses in hospitals across the country. STP Project is a group of three women from different areas who do planning, consulting and coordinating of books.
