An ode to Muriel Hasbun's paternal cousin Janet Samour Hasbun, who joined the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP) during the Salvadoran Civil War. Hasbun grew up in El Salvador in a Christian Palestinian family. At the revolution museum, the Museo de la Revolución, she came across a photograph of Janet holding a rifle, and remembered that her father, a dentist, had been asked to identify Janet's body after she was captured, tortured and killed in 1984, but his dental archive held no casts or X-rays of her smile. She had known Janet only through the eyes of a ten-year-old, as a beauty queen with long black hair; in the photograph she had become Comandante Filomena. Years later she discovered Janet in her father's family photographs, and this new album finally brings together Janet and Filomena amidst the family and the country, closing with a farewell and a song for her.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
