Panjereh (window or passageway) explores the experiences of political exile and migration of Sheida Soleimani's parents as a lens through which to examine broader systems of geopolitics. Known for intricate, studio-based compositions that combine photographs, props, live animals and even her own parents in surreal, magical-realist scenes, she expands her practice here with the debut of a new body of work featuring injured birds. The images draw on her work as a wildlife rehabilitator and founder of Congress of the Birds, a federally licensed wild bird rehabilitation centre in Rhode Island. The zine accompanies her first institutional solo exhibition in New York, at the International Center of Photography, where the curator Elisabeth Sherman describes how Soleimani braids her family's history, deep research into geopolitics and an inherited passion for care work into a visual language entirely her own.
