Une île is deliberately left without designation: it is a possible, a real and fictional narrative that retraces the attraction this place exerts on the imagination. The book gathers photographs made on the island of Rügen between 2011 and 2015, an original text by Jean-Yves Jouannais and extracts from an essay by Rafael Argullol, "The Attraction of the Abyss", published in 1983, together with found images, anonymous, archival or vernacular documents; the origin of each image is not specified, leaving the island drawn, floating between the possible and the imaginary. Rügen, in north-eastern Germany on the Baltic Sea, has chalk cliffs plunging into the sea that were immortalised by the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich; its geography is unstable and its contours shifting. Putbus, its first seaside resort, was founded in 1816. In 1936 the Nazi authorities planned a resort made of a single uniform six-kilometre building facing the sea: Prora, organised by the KdF, Kraft durch Freude, meant to welcome twenty thousand holidaymakers at the same time. Two-thirds built and never completed because the war interrupted construction, its ruins line up ten thousand identical rooms over five floors, all with a view of the sea; it later served as a military base for the Soviet army during the Cold War and temporarily disappeared from the maps. The book received the support of the Conseil général des Bouches-du-Rhône and of the Casa de Velázquez.
