"Tristes Tropiques: Illustrations hors texte" is an artist's book consisting of a facsimile of the "hors-texte" photographic supplement of the book Tristes Tropiques (1955) by the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. This supplement is made up of 63 black-and-white photos and a descriptive index. Aëgerter and van Tienhoven meticulously reconstituted these 63 photos with the inhabitants of Beetsterzwaag, a small village in the Dutch province of Friesland, within their landscape. Their revealing pictures recreate the intimacy the famous anthropologist acquired with the indigenous tribes of central Brazil three quarters of a century earlier. By this method of "counter-exploration" through time and space, the artists emphasise the continuity of human expression and cultural exchange. The book is numbered.
