Like the travel notebooks of the Englishman Bruce Chatwin, which gave us an incredibly sensitive and humanist vision of a world now lost for ever, the photographic wandering of Matt Wilson, himself an Anglo-Saxon globe-trotter, sometimes produces a few images of the countries he travels through, without preconceptions, according to mood and encounters. Few in number but so particular, these pictures, modest or even insignificant in their subject, are moreover presented, against the current trends of contemporary photography, in such small dimensions that we are obliged to stop and scrutinise them more closely. The image is mostly somewhat damaged because of the films, sometimes out of use, that the artist uses. The visual result is opalescent, with a very present grain and a decadent light causing intimate shadow zones in the night scenes and a charcoal-like, misty rendering in the daytime landscapes. This "random" shooting technique, which integrates the accidental into photographic vision, is the foundation of Wilson's language. All this ends up troubling our sight in order, little by little, to magnetise us and tip us into a poetic, timeless universe. Little by little this writing structures the whole through a vaguely narrative visual weft that leads us into fictional lands on the edge of a waking dream. Christine Ollier
