In autumn 2014 the Centre régional de la photographie Nord-Pas-de-Calais invited three young photographers, Valentine Solignac, Quentin Derouet and Francisco Supervielle, to a photographic residency in the town of Condé-sur-l'Escaut. A residency in a territory makes it possible to give an independent point of view on a space and its inhabitants, and sometimes to reveal ignored and unsuspected aspects: showing what had never attracted attention, because the angle of the shot or the light chosen by the photographers takes us where we did not expect to go. While remaining within a common commission on a precise place, these three photographers, who use different materials, from large to small format, from film to digital, from black and white to colour, carry us into a town whose images perhaps do not resemble what one usually sees or thinks one sees. They invite us to meet these places and their inhabitants; the intrinsic truth of the portraits is flagrant and gives us the imperceptible impression of already knowing them. This feeling of familiarity is the fruit of time spent discovering the region, without preconceptions and with respect.
