Tan = fire, blaze, in Breton. On 18 July 2022 a fire ravaged the moors at the foot of the Saint-Michel de Braspart mountain, in the Monts d'Arrée. Fast and devastating, it flared up again in August, leaving behind a transformed landscape and a wounded collective memory. Three photographers cast their gaze on this stricken territory. Stéphane Lavoué, Anne-Cécile Esteve and Gilles Pouliquen each, with their own sensibility, sought to capture what the flames left behind, not only in the earth and the blackened moors but in the bodies, faces and silences of those who live in this land. Anne-Cécile Esteve, invited in residence by the Écomusée des Monts d'Arrée, patiently listened to and photographed the inhabitants, gathering their testimonies as one gathers embers. Stéphane Lavoué and Gilles Pouliquen, deeply tied to this Breton territory, questioned the scar of the landscape, a silent witness of a historical transformation. TAN is a book of memory and presence, an act of resistance against oblivion.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
