There is no greater challenge for a photographer than to archive the invisible. Paul Cupido sets about it with delicacy, tracking the fleeting and eternal beauty of nature and capturing the reflections of the moon on petals or skin. "Recently Château Palmer gave me the chance to visit the estate, meet the winemakers and appreciate its geographical situation along the fertile banks of the Garonne; to taste, literally and figuratively, the philosophy and heritage of the château: the circular crafting of these magnificent wines. I was very impressed by the site, the animals, the soil, the culture, the dedication. I wish to offer a poetic interpretation of these elements, as a composer translates feelings into notes or a winemaker interprets what nature gives us. On site I intend to keep my senses awake. I am convinced that the work must impose itself, by listening to the 'spirit of place' and learning what this land wants from me." Selene is the Greek goddess of the moon, often associated with beauty, purity and cosmic order, and often depicted on ancient paintings as a young woman holding a torch or a crescent moon.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
