Five photographers, five notebooks, five perspectives: Carline Bourdelas, Divine; Nadia Bouzguenda, Inner Patterns; Françoise Evenou, La couleur du désir; Karin Fellinger, Mélancolie; Anita Hélène, Nocturne. 2020 was a year of uncertainty, the year of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Confined at home, blocked in countries where we were studying or working, our accelerated globe-trotting lives suddenly stopped; it was a very dark year for many. In this climate of fear and doubt the first publishing project of The Masterclass was born: lives must be saved, yes, but the human spirit too. After more than fifteen years of teaching and mentoring in cultural institutions and international festivals such as the Rencontres d'Arles, Diana Lui saw how essential obstinate perseverance is to any photographic work, and decided to take one more step to help the work of those she mentors become more visible, offering a concrete springboard towards art publishing in the form of a group project. ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
