The Prix Virginia is organised every two years by the association Sylvia S. for a professional woman, of any nationality, living and of any age. The pictures submitted must be unpublished in France and exclude press work and advertising commissions; the jury of eight cultural personalities is renewed every two years. Why a prize for a woman photographer? "The women of my family were foundational for me: Virginia, my grandmother, a pianist, my great-aunt, a painter, and my mother, a sculptor, nourished my curiosity for art from earliest childhood. This filiation opened my path as an artist. Creating the Prix Virginia affirms my support for the recognition of women photographers; it is also a way of sharing the passions that were passed on to me." The box gathers twenty-two plates with two images by each laureate and one image by each selected photographer. A device lets one display an image on a small stand, so that the reader can pull out the plates like a perpetual calendar.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
