Light! In the digital age, many forget that photography comes from light and from the moment it impresses film, a film and not a file. For this fifth edition most of the photographers, and many students, used analogue film. The newly invited school, the Ostkreuzschule in Berlin, lets its students work digitally only in their third year, not out of nostalgia or snobbery but because nothing renders light better than film. Sarah Moon uses her last negative Polaroid films, which best restore the winter light of the beach; so does Rinko Kawauchi, fascinated by the movements of sky and sea; and Thierry Dreyfus, specialist of artificial lighting, is in perpetual quest of natural light. Philippe Ramette could not have made his images without digital retouching, yet he bans any Photoshop work from his practice, as the Making of film shown at the venues testifies. Henry Roy followed the start of the Figaro race as if filming a colour dream, Kristine Thiemann met Deauville's inhabitants for many bouts of laughter and funny, unpublished pictures, and Camille Picquot and Tono Mejuto, winners of the Fondation Louis Roederer Prize 2013, returned to continue their work. Text by Patrick Remy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
