The bet was risky! Many photographers are attached to a territory; they like to photograph their daily surroundings, their city or region, and do not like to venture further. Making them travel, leaving their universe for another they do not know, like Deauville, is a mad, risky bet, the way we like them, and a successful one. Gunnar Smoliansky left Sweden for his first real commission abroad at eighty. Kishin Shinoyama, rooted in Japanese tradition, came with two models from the Land of the Rising Sun. Terri Weifenbach left American nature to explore much smaller but inspiring spaces: the gardens of Deauville. Zhuang Jay travelled from restless China for the Asian film festival. Grégoire Alexandre abandoned the cottony atmosphere of the studio for the bad weather of the beach, while Audrey Corregan and Erik Haberfeld, like private detectives or archaeologists, reconstituted a temporary studio in a villa hall to investigate the town's culinary tradition. Harry Gruyaert sees a place only through its palette of colours, and Lucie and Simon seek mystery in everyday sets. Lore Stessel, 2012 Louis Roederer Prize winner, photographed the town's borders as a line in the landscape. Text by Patrick Remy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
