And why not? Why not call on magazine photographers, even fashion photographers, to photograph Deauville? They are used to commissions, but also to commercial constraints, and above all they have the skill to smuggle art in. For this third edition the festival called on artists one meets most often in magazines (but also in galleries and museums), such as Paolo Roversi, a "fashion portraitist" as he likes to define himself and an undisputed star of the genre for over twenty years. Alongside him is the young generation embodied by the Canadian Kourtney Roy, who stages herself and plays brilliantly with nostalgia for the 1960s. Simon Procter, a lover of horses, spectacularly captured three privileged equestrian moments of the town. Tania and Vincent distil still lifes inspired by magazines or commissions for luxury brands. Kate Fichard, winner of the previous year's Fondation Louis Roederer prize, continues to explore Deauville with her sharp, pertinent gaze, and Filip Dujardin metamorphoses its architecture and landscapes with a humour worthy of the Belgian surrealists he claims as his own. Text by Patrick Remy, artistic director.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
