Pierres blanches retraces more than twenty years of solitary walks by Thomas Dhellemmes, guided by the diffuse light of his Polaroid SX-70. On the paths of Normandy, between customs-officers' trails and coastal footpaths, the artist advances slowly, listening to the fragile world around him. This book is an inner journey marked out by "white stones", symbols of safe passages, luminous instants and suspended emotions. These natural forms, discreet but powerful, become landmarks, silent echoes of a sought-after serenity. Thomas Dhellemmes photographs with a rare, imperfect tool whose very imprecision opens the image to every interpretation. Each Polaroid captures a fleeting sensation, a horizon line, a trace of wonder before nature or the invisible. Between intimate diary and poetic logbook, Pierres blanches pays homage to those who came before him, painters, writers and photographers who nourished his gaze. The book thus becomes an invitation to slow down, to see differently, to let oneself be guided by the signs that the landscape murmurs to whoever knows how to listen. Exhibition at Galerie Polka, Paris, from 13 November 2025.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
