At the heart of a care unit for homeless people, the photographer Cyril Zannettacci witnessed in 2021 the surge of the Covid-19 epidemic. Located in Nanterre, at the gates of Paris, the Centre d'Hébergement et d'Assistance aux Personnes Sans-Abri (CHAPSA), a place unique in France, welcomes and accompanies homeless people through a pathway of care. With the air of an abandoned hospital, the centre has housed homeless people since the late nineteenth century. Lacking the same resources and the same reputation as conventional medicine, social medicine suffers from a considerable lack of means, budgets and staff: rationing or even disappearance of certain hygiene products, run-down premises, toilets condemned for months, a night team reduced to one nurse and one care assistant for forty-eight patients. At the head of the medical service, Dr Valérie Thomas is on the verge of handing in her white coat: this hybrid institution is at breaking point. She deplores not only the "State's contempt for those who care for the poorest" but also the injustice tied to the deterioration of services, which has reached its peak since the epidemic.
