Contemporary photography has been passionate about peri-urban zones for fifty years, and André Mérian's work sits indisputably within this current. It is a catalogue of places that, far from being motifs or pretexts, are shown in tension between natural spaces and their irremediable transformation into spaces of use. The images impose the neutral by refusing the construction of meaning. This book presents Ouest, a series by André Mérian offering a critical and no less sensitive look at urbanism in Brittany, made during an artist's residency with the association Gwinzegal in Guingamp between 2008 and 2010 in the Côtes d'Armor. Mérian works "as an ethnologist, an amused explorer, a Baudelairian flâneur, spotting the rout of an idea of modernity. For him it is not a matter of monumentalising the motif and giving it a quasi-virtual aspect. On the contrary, in these images what seems to exceed the real rests both on the absolute banality of land planning and on the eviction of any idea of nature," notes the art critic Damien Sausset.
