An American living in France like the writer Gertrude Stein, Elizabeth Lennard discovered in 1996 an echo of her own work in the myriad short pieces Stein wrote while experimenting, in a Cubist style, with a total and fragmentary vision of the world. The photographic version of Objects Lie on a Table is an amusing inventory of our daily life made of vegetables, tea-set items and plastic animals on a gingham cloth, whose playful, childlike aspect is reinforced by a colourful, shimmering finish. "But these are not still-life photographs. Their title is that of a play by Gertrude Stein that led Lennard to the photographs. Stein's fragmentary titles become doors opening onto her texts, seductive because they do not tell us what they are or where we are going. We have to find our own entrance. Stein's titles open adventures." Extract from the preface by Ulla Dydo.
