All the photographers gathered here understand travel as it was once understood: with time ahead and space around, with room to stitch together the imaginary and the real, far from tourist flows and the syndrome of collecting places. Jacques Borgetto has for years criss-crossed and photographed Latin America, a land to which he belongs, which holds him and which he renders with force and precision, a vision little inclined to clichés. Sophie Zénon, a great traveller, has repeatedly criss-crossed Asia, notably Mongolia, Far-Eastern Siberia and Cambodia, which we find revisited in her images. Even further from exoticism and closer to poetic language, with Françoise Nuñez and Bernard Plossu travel becomes sentimental: places are mere pretexts and settings, the true destination is the other. From Mexico to Italy, from Greece to Andalusia, their gazes, starting from the same viewpoint, give a stereoscopic vision in which photography is as much the reflection of inner visions as of reality.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
