The process by which Vincent Debanne's images are made is long, since it is always a photographic re-creation and a scripting by montage and accumulation, a method at once empirical and exaggerative, aspiring to the most faithful transcription of the experience of places (which often act as apparatuses: business districts, shopping malls, factories, places devoted to work, spectacle, leisure and power) and of observed social facts. Imagination, through scripting, deploys in his pictures its prospective and revealing capacity; it confirms experience and perfects the photographic capture, which for him is always incomplete, falling short of experience, observation and feeling. His images are articulated according to several temporalities, use anachronistic effects and work on the relations between aesthetics and politics. References to painting and history give him the means of parody, the real stake being the description of the contemporary. Recourse to a past iconography, such as propaganda and history painting, the matrix of his images, lets him renew our view of the present and reveal its archaisms.
