As part of the 2010 Normandie Impressionniste festival and the exhibition "Dans un jardin", French photographer Bernard Plossu received a specific commission on the garden at Giverny. Plossu photographed the house and gardens of Claude Monet, and this book presents an unpublished ensemble of sixty photographs taken on two visits, in winter 2010 and spring 2011, at different hours and in different seasons. All the pictures reveal the painter's house in a radically new and singular way. One finds the tremor of images taken while walking, the feeling of emptiness, the poetry of silences, the use of grain and photographic grey, strong atmospheric moods and mirror effects, all constants of Plossu's way of working. The photographer plays with absence: the toile de Jouy covering the furniture in the dressing room or the studio-salon in winter, the fleeting silhouettes of tourists on rue Claude Monet in spring.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
