Monaco is known as one of the smallest and richest countries in the world, but not for its architecture. On a tiny territory one finds a phenomenal density of different architectural styles. Traditional planning rules have had to be rethought over the years as the Principality developed and ran short of space, which is limited naturally by sea and mountain; solutions are to be sought upwards and over the water. The superimposition of generations and styles, Art Deco, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, classical and contemporary, makes a terrain well suited to analysis and to comparing viewpoints from the sea. The work is the fruit of a walk through the streets of Monaco, over the rooftops and on the water, shot between 2012 and 2015. Perspectives were not straightened as the German school would have it; on the contrary they were accentuated by a wide-angle lens that pulls vanishing points to infinity. Presented in a comparative, rhythmic format like a stroll through the country, the book invites the viewer to lift their head to the sky and escape urban density.
