Melos is a book between darkness and hope. An old postcard annotated by its sender, "Distant and sad greetings from the Orient", seems to sum up the point Guillaume Lebrun reached at the end of a journey from Istanbul to Thessaloniki by way of neighbouring Bulgaria, places that form one of the crucibles of European and Mediterranean civilisations but also a zone where identities, languages, nationalities and religions have never stopped opposing one another. Unity of place and shared destiny appear in his portraits of young people, impossible to place as Greek, Bulgarian or Turkish, while the fracture shows in landscapes and details, often as an impossibility of seeing set against the desire to see: a red curtain, a scratched window masking Hagia Sophia, rain erasing the outlines of the Bosphorus.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
