"What struck her was that you didn't go straight, as photographers often do, to its heart, the abbey itself, but began by circling around it; she rightly said your work partook more of a walk through landscape. One doesn't cross paths with anyone, or at least you don't seem to want to compose with any presence on the site. Looking at your contact sheets, one imagines you photographing while walking, or walking while photographing, and notices it is the park's space that inspires you first, the monument coming second, in the background," an extract from a correspondence between Bernard Plossu and Gabriel Bauret on his Jumièges residency, where the grey, neutral sky and circling birds become recurring motifs animating the photographic space.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
