Trained in sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques, Lisa Sartorio moved her practice toward performance and visual art; her photographic work questions the impact of documentary images within our consumerist societies, their dematerialised circulation and hyper-reproducibility feeding a mass consumption that leaves content forgotten and meaning lost, asking how to give war images, too heavily mediatised, back their testimonial force. Sartorio transfers them, plastically, from fluidity to a tactile presence between skin and bark, using the generalised tree as a model to create landscapes-as-limits that give the darkest events of the twentieth century new form, in a constant experimental fiction-documentary, repositioning our relationship to image and History.
