Autumn 2020: photographer Frédéric Stucin pushes open the door of the P'tite Cafète in Niort, a care space attached to the hospital's psychiatric unit where patients who wish come to spend time, have a drink, eat ice cream, watch a match or talk among themselves and with carers. One week a month, the photographer offers to create, together, "truly dreamed portraits", a photograph that tells them, that says what one wants to say about oneself at that moment, betting that the outside gaze becomes not a hindrance but an occasion for sharing, so that patients show themselves rather than simply being looked at, the resulting portraits interspersed with views of the venue and striking archival photographs found in the ward's boxes.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
