I left for Lisbon with my mother, Valérie Loiseleux, for the editing of Manoel de Oliveira's last film, L'Étrange Affaire Angélica, wishing to recover memories of a cinema I had grown up with; this new Lisbon journey doubled as an inward one, through the editing rooms of Oliveira's twenty previous films. Les Gants blancs became a film about my apprenticeship in cinema, about what the director and his editor silently passed on to me year after year. The book/DVD includes Louise Traon's fifty-two-minute documentary and the day-by-day editing diary of film editor Valérie Loiseleux, who filmed by her own daughter throughout the editing process, became unusually attentive to her own gestures and to what could be seen, and transmitted, at work.
