Pascal Grimaud unsettles reassuring clichés, leaving the beaten path to show a different side of Provence and its villages, his photographs like the inverted image of postcard clichés devoted to holidaymakers who never stay long and never really know those who live and work there year-round: deserted streets and squares, houses for sale or under construction, spreading asphalt, a road giving onto a dirt track amid abandoned land, contrasting with the beauty of old farms still surrounded by cultivated fields. The book traces a two-year residency across Boulbon, Charleval, Eygalières and Puyloubier, gathering archival documents, work prints, autobiographical notes, sketches and contact sheets into a notebook offering access to a work in progress.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
