Since beginning in photography in 2001, Ali Taptik has pursued a half-fictional, half-autobiographical chronicle of his own life in Istanbul. Through portraits of people and places, he reinvents his own history in a particular atmosphere; begun in 2004, this series explores the possible links between accident and fate, hence the title Kaza ve Kader, questioning how much control one has over the course of one's own life in a dialectic of opposites, navigating an incessant back-and-forth between inside and outside, intimate and public, his photographs as much windows onto the world as an inner mirror.
