A lifelong photography enthusiast whose great-uncle was a friend and patron of Eugène Atget, Patrice Calmettes was not yet twenty when Diana Vreeland invited him to shoot for Vogue USA, a complicity that lasted years before Andy Warhol asked him to collaborate with Interview. After decades of cosmopolitan life, he retreated into a meditation on timelessness: portraits, architecture and landscapes rooted in the origins of Western civilisation, mostly shot on Ibiza, a Mediterranean island of excess and stillness since Phoenician times, in a meticulous, graphic black and white close in spirit to Robert Mapplethorpe's.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
