Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi continues to resist with courage and creativity since his 2010 sentence of six years in prison and twenty years' ban on filmmaking and foreign travel, an internationally recognised figure awarded at Cannes, Berlin and Venice who has made fifteen features and shorts and become a symbol for all artists fighting in Iran today. Accompanying a full retrospective at the Centre Pompidou, this first book devoted to him revisits his filmmaking and his photography, including the "Nuages" (Clouds) series begun at the time of his sentencing: unable to take his camera into the streets, he opened his window and instead photographed the sky, black and white clouds enough, he felt, to tell a story.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
