The health crisis worsened family difficulties, increasing breakdowns especially in fragile households; in France the average age of independence is twenty-seven, while child protection ends at eighteen, creating a period of vulnerability for many young people, forty percent of homeless under-25s having come through the child welfare system. Anaïs Oudart focused on young women aged eighteen to twenty-five who had experienced family breakdown, working in 2022 with seven child-welfare and emergency-housing organisations across France, letting her subjects choose how and where they wanted to be portrayed to underline their strength and resilience, the title's "17" referring to the critical age of many such breakdowns.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
