Grozny, capital of a Chechnya scarred by war, is a melting pot for a Caucasian society in full transformation, trying to overcome the trauma of two recent wars and to find its own way of life between Chechen tradition, Muslim custom and globalisation. Begun in 2009 by three young women who met through an online seminar for emerging Russian photographers and went on to found Russia's first photography collective, Verso, the project explores the postwar city through nine levels of existence, inspired by Thornton Wilder's Theophilus North and its idea that nine facets of a city are hidden within a single one. The project won the 2017 Luma Foundation Dummy Book Award at the Rencontres d'Arles.
