Having crossed deserts and the Mediterranean to flee their countries, mostly from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan, migrants embark from the Libyan coast on overcrowded boats bound for Italy or Sicily, but many instead wash up on Malta, short of the coveted heart of Europe. Fuel shortages, engine failures, storms, coastguards and frequent shipwrecks end the search for a better life, and the small island, a tourist paradise for those who arrive by air, becomes something closer to a penal colony for those who arrive by sea. Through calm images and testimonies gathered over several stays, Pierre Le Tulzo records the impasse and violence faced by Malta's shipwrecked migrants.
