It would be hard to say at first glance whether Corinne Mercadier's photographs stage a presence or an absence. They show what we are at once very close to and infinitely separated from: the dark water of a lake, the colour of a sky, a stretch of wall, a glass demijohn abandoned on a beach, suddenly dearer to the heart than any treasure. Shadows thicken, light grows more intense, and the grain of time reveals itself.
