Philippe Koudjina, from Niger, left Benin to settle there in the nineteen-sixties: photographer of independence, he is the witness of an era — the Hamani Diori years, the yé-yé, the uranium boom and moments of happiness and carefreeness. Mamadou Konaté was born in Bamako and runs the Kela Fox studio; like many African photographers he came to the medium through the video work he does at weddings, festivals, businesses and political campaigns, and he conceptualises the definition of the object and its use, a visual approach rare in African photography but not new in contemporary African art. Mathe Kebofhe, from Botswana, holds that only the lens can capture the reality of life in the township and tell its story best: these are pictures of different families made at night without flash.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
