"The gaze is not so much for me an outgoing flow as an incoming one. To feel, to listen, to let yourself be impressed by what is outside yourself. To see. Before being a project or an intention, photography is for me a way of feeling the world. When I make a picture I never take a picture of something. If there is no subject strictly speaking in my images, it is because my aim is, conversely, to make something appear — something that without my gaze would have remained invisible, and that needs me in order to exist. Nature does not need me to make itself visible, to expose its deep coherence, to speak. So why photograph it? To make landscape? If the landscape, as bewitching and surprising and mysterious as it is, pre-exists in my picture, what is the interest in showing it? I do not want to show, I mean."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
