The book goes back over the elements that have marked the whole of Mimmo Jodice’s wide artistic output: the early experiments in which he combines abstract and figurative elements, works on the paper by collage and tearing and, earlier still, imposes movement on static subjects in the darkroom; the gradual moving away from the human figure, replaced by metaphysical landscapes in which reality and imagination overlap; the study of the past and of memory through archaeological remains, set in a state of timeless suspension, and statues eaten away by the centuries, where archaeology becomes a meditation in images on the making and unmaking of form; and the Mediterranean, where time and history are absent because myth reigns undisputed. Jodice is an enchanted traveller. He does not fire the camera at once but waits for wonder to show itself — the wonder of the world, of that unstoppable human energy that leaves its mark on things and gives shape to objects, buildings and architectural spaces that outlast the people who made them by years and centuries. For him photography can represent without limiting itself to documenting, and that is why his images are like ancient sibylline oracles. This gathering of nearly a hundred pictures gives back the measure of a timeless artist.
