FotoNote series
This volume, unpublished in Italy, brings together a hundred and seventeen images by the artist, introduced by a text from the historian and curator Clément Chéroux and accompanied by updated biographical and bibliographical notes. Described variously as a conceptual artist, a photographer, a film-maker and even a private detective, Sophie Calle has built a practice recognisable at once for its unusual narrative elements and for the frequent pairing of pictures and texts in a personal, searching account. Called the Marcel Duchamp of dirty laundry by The Guardian, her projects move along the borders between the intimate and the public, reality and fiction, art and life. She has invited strangers to sleep in her bed, followed a man through the streets of Paris and Venice, asked blind people to describe the last image they remembered, and much else. Offering her own emotional and psychological life as the subject of her art, she asks the viewer to dwell on pain, loss and remembrance. The book gathers more than twenty of her best-known projects together with her own words: in precise, plain language, at times light and at times grave, the stories she tells trace the path of an uncommon woman and artist, used to moving where invention and truth overlap.
