Essay by Yve-Alain Bois

For the fiftieth anniversary of Picasso’s death the Paris museum dedicated to the painter invited the artist to take over the Hôtel Salé. Faced with one of the masters of modern art she chose to empty the museum’s spaces entirely, so that Picasso was expelled, and to install her own furniture and personal objects on the upper floors while unfurling a counter-exhibition on the ground floor.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
