"1979. Fuel strikes, rubbish piling up in the street, it looked like the end of the world — the end of my childhood, at any rate. While we danced to Joy Division and The Clash in my bedroom during the six weeks the schools were shut, I saw that break as something positive. Gigs and skateparks instead of studying, I loved it. As the year turned into the new decade, in 1980, I was fourteen and I managed to get hold of my first camera. It gave me a place in the do-it-yourself movement of the post-punk generation. I could take pictures wherever I went, share them with my friends and try to get a few of them into local fanzines. Over the years punk gave way to electro, to hip-hop and then to house music at parties, and I always took my camera along. Without thinking about the long-term consequences, slowly but surely I began to build an archive of the times, of my times." — Nick Waplington. Published by Jesus Blue, Anaglypta is a brick of a volume that gathers, like the photograph album of a whole life, 512 previously unpublished pictures made on three continents over four decades, mixing the punks, friends and raves of his youth with his later life as a father.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
