The first monograph by the Brazilian photographer and surfer Vava Ribeiro, made on the north shore of Oahu across the early 2000s, when he spent long stretches living among the people who have built their houses beside the heaviest waves in the world. The landscapes and seascapes are the quiet half of the book, often overcast, sometimes menacing; the other half is made of portraits taken at close range in kitchens, yards and car parks, among them Kelly Slater and John John Florence, photographed as neighbours rather than as champions. What emerges is less a surf book than a portrait of a small place that the rest of the sport visits once a year.
