A rebuild of the book that made Nick Waplington's name. The first version, published in 1991, portrayed the households of two families on the Broxtowe council estate on the western edge of Nottingham, where Waplington had gone to visit his grandfather's neighbours and stayed for years: cramped front rooms, patterned wallpaper, children climbing over furniture, adults caught mid-argument or mid-laugh, all in dense saturated colour and on-camera flash. This edition keeps the sequence and the alternation of wide interiors and close portraits, but every frame has been swapped for one never shown before, in many cases taken seconds earlier or later on the same roll of film. The effect is of a familiar story retold by the same voice in slightly different words: a return to Thatcher's Britain and to the working-class households that carried it, and at the same time a measure of the decades that have passed since.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
